Nippon Kaiji Kyokai
Since its establishment in 1899, the company's main business has been ship inspections and classification of ships to ensure safety and prevent environmental pollution, and it is now the world's largest classification society in terms of number of ships, with over 9,000 registered ships. In addition, we contribute to society through various certification services such as ISO, etc., based on our knowledge and experience as a third-party organization.
We have been recognized by ICAO as an SCS for alternative fuel for aviation (SAF) in October 2024, beginning with GHG emissions verification (ICAO, IMO). We will continue to contribute to the decarbonization of shipping and aviation, and to the realization of a carbon-neutral society by 2050, based in Japan.

Although industry, government, and academia are collaborating to study and conduct demonstration experiments to expand SAF production, supply is low in relation to demand, and the Sustainability Certification Scheme (SCS) to obtain ICAO certification is only for EU organizations (EU standards). The SCS (Sustainability Certification Scheme) to obtain ICAO certification is only for EU organizations (EU standards), and the time, cost, and labor required to obtain certification are currently an issue. Therefore, the Society has been preparing for the establishment of a Japan-based SCS in order to efficiently obtain certification based on ICAO standards and to promote and expand CORSIA SAF.
In October 2024, the Society was officially recognized as the third SCS in the world (the first outside the EU), and will work with affiliated accreditation and certification bodies to establish a new SCS in order to promote and expand the supply of SAF. We will work together with our partner accreditation and certification bodies to expand the supply of SAF.
