Carbon neutrality is a great challenge for our company, whose main business is fossil fuels, but at the same time, we see this as an opportunity to contribute to society by utilizing the technology, knowledge, and infrastructure that we have developed over many years of handling hydrocarbons. We aim to achieve virtually zero CO2 emissions from our own operations by 2050, and in order to realize our 2030 vision of becoming a "responsible reformer," we will also help our customers reduce their CO2 emissions by providing energy and materials that support the realization of a carbon-neutral, recycling-oriented society.
In our view, the order of spread of SAF is (1) ATJ derived from ethanol feedstock, (2) HEFA derived from oil feedstock, and (3) synthetic fuel derived from CO2 in the short to medium term, and in the long term, we assume that the world will become a mix of the above three processes in the future.
Based on this assumption, we will work as follows
- By leveraging the strength of its existing JET fuel production and supply infrastructure, the company aims to establish a domestic supply system of 500,000 KL/year by 2030.
- For ATJ and HEFA, there is a common issue of raw material procurement, and they will work to develop supply chains in Japan and overseas.
- In ATJ, where SAF production technology needs to be developed, the GI Fund has been adopted, and commercial-scale production will begin in 26 years, after technology development.
Synthetic fuels derived from CO2 will also be commercialized through the Ministry of the Environment PJ, with a consortium of six companies working to commercialize a SAF supply chain based on the carbon cycle.
