TOPPAN Holdings Corporation

Since its establishment in 1900, TOPPAN has aimed to be a company that creates social value, and has conducted a wide range of business activities based on all kinds of technology and know-how with "printing" as its starting point, and by understanding the changing market and customer needs over time. In January 2021, TOPPAN formulated the "TOPPAN Group Environmental Vision 2050," which sets forth its long-term policy for addressing global environmental issues, and is promoting efforts to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized and resource-recycling society.

With the aim of realizing a low-carbon and recycling-oriented energy society, we are working with ENEOS Corporation to develop technology and launch a project to produce bioethanol from recycled paper. In this project, not only ordinary recycled paper but also difficult-to-recycle recovered paper such as waterproofed paper and non-carbon paper, which are considered difficult to recycle, will be optimized and used as raw materials for bioethanol. In addition, through our extensive network of customers, we will establish procurement routes for cellulosic wastes, including difficult-to-recycle recovered paper. By using inedible cellulose-derived bioethanol such as recovered paper as a feedstock, we expect to avoid competition with foodstuffs and secure stable feedstock, in addition to improving CO2 emission reduction effects.
